Behind the Lens with Lloyd Media Group

Have you ever wondered who’s behind the creation of those videos you see on company websites or social media feeds? You might think it’s all about the videographers or the onscreen talent, but there’s someone working behind the scenes – the video producer – helping make it happen.

I’ve been a video producer for a l-o-n-g time, and I LOVE my job! My background is broadcast journalism so for me, it was a natural transition to move into video production. I oversee the creation of all types of video content including corporate communications, social media, digital content, educational materials, and web-based media. As a producer, I’m involved in every step of the production process from concept to final cut.

A video producer is the person who brings all the pieces together. We juggle creativity with logistics, embrace organizational skills, manage teams, interview talent and subject matter experts, and navigate challenges without going nuts.

First off, we’re storytellers. We work closely with clients to understand their goals and translate them into a compelling narrative. Whether it’s a product launch, a company culture video, or a complex explainer, we’re creating stories that resonate.

We’re also project managers, budget wizards, and problem solvers. Juggling deadlines, coordinating production and post-production teams, and ensuring everything runs smoothly is our bread and butter. I liken it to herding cats, but lots more fun.

We’re also a bit like detectives. We dig deep into research and complex information; learn about the organization, its story, and what makes it tick. This helps us create content that not only looks good but actually connects with the audience.

And let’s not forget the creative part! Like me, many of my fellow video producers are also scriptwriters.

Here’s how I explain the video producer’s job during a project.

Concept Development: The project begins with an idea. Whether it’s a promotional video, customer testimonial, or training module, the video producer collaborates with clients and creative teams to develop a concept that aligns with the company’s goals.

Pre-Production: This phase involves brainstorming, concept development, and meticulous planning. Producers create storyboards, scripts, and project timelines. We secure locations, hire crew members, and ensure all necessary equipment is available.

Side note: when I write scripts I fall back on my journalistic skills like research, interviewing, fact-checking, and storytelling that enrich video production. content development and narrative structuring.

Budgeting and Scheduling: Video producers are responsible for creating and managing the budget. This means allocating resources wisely to ensure that the project stays on track financially. We also develop a production schedule, coordinating with various teams to make sure everything runs smoothly and on time.

Assembling the Right Team: A successful production relies on the talents of many individuals. We are tasked with assembling the right crew for the job. From hiring directors and videographers to securing sound technicians and editors, the producer ensures each role is filled by someone who can contribute to the project’s success.

Overseeing Production: The producer oversees the day-to-day operations of the production. Video producers manage the set, ensuring everything runs smoothly and stays on schedule. We troubleshoot issues, make real-time decisions, and coordinate the efforts of the crew and cast. I do all of this usually while conducting interviews and coaching the talent.

Post-Production: After the cameras stop rolling, the work is far from over. Post-production is where producers oversee the editing process, ensuring the final product aligns with the client’s vision. This includes selecting the best takes, double-checking all information is accurate, managing sound design, and incorporating visual effects. We work closely with editors to fine-tune the video until it meets client expectations.

Sure, there are challenges that come with the job. One biggie: budget constraints. Balancing your creative vision with budget limitations is common. Another is tight deadlines. This often requires me to be the bad guy by enforcing stringent time management across the entire team.

Luckily there are many rewards as well. My favorite: creative fulfillment. Bringing a story to life and watching the final product is incredibly satisfying. Variety is the spice of life so having a wide range of projects keeps the work interesting and dynamic. And I really love making an impact. It gives me and my fellow video producers a sense of accomplishment and purpose.

So, the next time you watch a video and think, “Wow, that was awesome,” remember, there was probably a video producer behind the scenes pulling all the strings. Just saying….
